Interior painting cost in Central Iowa depends on which rooms and surfaces you're painting, the shape your walls are in, the paint you pick and how easy the rooms are to work in. We give you an exact price after a free walkthrough, with all the work listed in your written quote.
We don't publish a price list, because the details of each home change the price too much. Here's what sets the price, and how to check whether two quotes cover the same work.
What sets the price of an interior paint job?
Two rooms the same size can be priced very differently because of details like these:
- Paint type and sheen: the product line and finish you choose.
- Cutting in: trim, windows and decorative details all take careful brushwork.
- Room to work: furniture and obstacles that limit how easily we can move around the room.
- Access and time of day: when we can get into the home and which hours work for you.
- Your timeline: how quickly you need the project finished.
- Wall condition: patching, repairs and stains that need attention first.
That's why every Mission quote starts with a free walkthrough. We look at each room in person, then give you one price for a written scope before any work starts.
What your written quote covers
- Labor and paint: premium Sherwin-Williams interior paint, applied in even coats.
- Preparation: the cleaning, patching, sanding and caulking each surface needs, listed for the surfaces we're painting.
- Protection: floors, furniture and fixtures covered during the work.
- Cleanup and a final walkthrough: we walk each room with you and handle touch-ups before we call the job done.
Larger drywall repairs, stained wood and cabinets are scoped separately. Cabinets have their own process and coatings, so we cover them on our cabinet painting and staining page.
Why square footage can give you the wrong comparison
A price "per square foot" only means something when you know which square feet. Floor area, wall area and ceiling area are very different numbers for the same room.
Floor area versus paintable wall area: a worked example
Take an illustrative 12-by-12-foot bedroom with 8-foot walls. This is a sample room, not a specific Mission job.
- Floor area: 12 × 12 = 144 square feet
- Gross wall area: 2 × (12 + 12) × 8 = 384 square feet, before subtracting the door and windows
- Ceiling area: another 144 square feet
Gross walls plus ceiling come to 528 square feet before subtracting doors and windows, about 3.7 times the floor area. If one painter quotes per square foot of floor and another per square foot of wall, their numbers can't be compared directly.
What floor area leaves out
- Wall height: the same room with 9-foot walls has 432 square feet of wall, 12.5% more than with 8-foot walls.
- Stairwells and tall foyers, which need ladders or planks and more setup time.
- Closets, doors and trim, which add detail work that square footage doesn't capture.
- The number of rooms. Five small rooms take more cutting-in than one open space of the same size.
What changes an interior painting quote?
Wall condition and repairs
Filling nail holes and small dings is normal preparation. Cracks, water stains, peeling paint and damaged drywall take more time and should be listed in the quote.
If a stain comes from a leak, fix the leak first. Paint covers a stain; it doesn't fix the cause. Any extra repair work should be priced and approved before it starts.
Surfaces, colors and finish
- Big color changes, especially dark to light, can need primer or an extra coat.
- Sheen affects how much wall flaws show. Flat finishes generally hide flaws better. How well a wall cleans depends on both the sheen and the paint product.
- Each added surface (ceilings, trim, doors, closets) adds labor and should appear as its own line.
Height, furniture and household access
We ask homeowners to move small furniture, décor and personal items before the project starts. Our team protects floors, countertops and any large furniture that stays in the room.
Tell your estimator which rooms you need to use during the work and any pets or schedules to plan around. A single room often takes about a day; a whole-home interior runs several days, depending on size and prep.
Compare painting estimates for the same work
Two quotes can differ by a lot simply because they cover different work. Before comparing totals, check that both proposals answer the same questions. And make sure everything you talked about is written in the quote, not just agreed to out loud.
The side-by-side quote checklist
- Rooms: listed by name, not "main floor."
- Surfaces per room: walls, ceilings, trim, doors, closets.
- Paint: brand, product line and sheen.
- Coats: how many on walls and ceilings.
- Preparation: patching, sanding, caulking and spot priming.
- Repairs: included, excluded or priced separately.
- Protection and cleanup: floors, furniture and daily cleanup.
- Furniture: who moves what.
- Changes: how extra work is approved and documented.
- Timing: start window and expected duration.
- Communication: who your contact is and how quickly they respond. How quickly the quote shows up can tell you a lot about how they communicate.
- Warranty: what is covered and for how long.
A real Mission Painting interior project in West Des Moines
In June 2026 we finished a full interior refresh in a West Des Moines home. The scope covered walls and ceilings in every room, including the bedrooms, bathroom, closets, stairwell and main living areas.
The owners chose a soft blue palette that pairs with their white trim, dark floors and black railing. Painting the ceilings along with the walls made every room look brighter and more finished.

Interior painting cost questions
How much does it cost to paint one room?
It depends on the room. A small bedroom with walls only is a very different job from a living room with tall ceilings, lots of trim and furniture to work around. A free walkthrough gets you an exact price for your room.
Are ceilings, trim and doors included?
Only if they're listed. A room repaint doesn't automatically cover every surface, so ask for each one by name in the quote.
Can you estimate from my home's square footage alone?
Not accurately. Floor area doesn't tell a painter your wall height, room count, trim or wall condition, as the worked example above shows.
Can the project be split into phases?
Yes. Many homeowners start with the main living areas and do bedrooms later. Ask how phasing affects setup time and scheduling before you decide.
